An instant form is the lead form Meta opens inside Facebook or Instagram when someone taps a lead ad, so they can send you their details without leaving the app (Meta Business Help Center). Meta can prefill name, email and phone number when the person has already given them to Meta. That prefill is the whole pitch: fewer taps between interest and submit.
How an instant form works
You create a campaign with the Leads objective, choose Instant forms as the conversion location at ad set level, then create or pick a form at ad level (create an instant form). A form has a type, an optional intro, at least one question, a privacy policy section and an ending screen. Meta’s articles disagree on whether the privacy policy link is optional or required, so add one. You can ask up to 15 custom questions, and people can edit any prefilled answer before they submit.
The quality filters only exist in forms built in Ads Manager: custom questions, conditional logic, phone verification by one-time password and work email validation. A form created in Meta Business Suite can only collect contact information. Ads Manager also keeps just your 100 most recent saved forms.
Instant form types
| Type | What Meta says it does | Where it runs |
|---|---|---|
| More volume (default) | quick to fill out and submit on a mobile device | lead ad placements: Feed, Stories, reels, Marketplace and more |
| Higher intent | adds a note that the business may follow up, plus a review screen to confirm details | Facebook Feed and Instagram feed, mobile only |
| Rich creative | brand colors, images and extra text; the intro section is mandatory | its rich features show only in the Facebook app on mobile |

Where you see instant form leads
In Ads Manager, open the Ads tab and click On-Facebook leads in the Results column to download leads as CSV or XLS. The same leads are in the Instant forms section and the Leads Center of Meta Business Suite, through the API, or in a connected CRM (download your leads).
Every downloaded lead carries ad_id, adset_id, campaign_id, form_id, is_organic and platform (download fields), so a CRM that keeps those columns can report leads per ad ID with no tracking setup.
Limits worth knowing
- Leads expire after 90 days. Meta keeps them downloadable for 90 days from submission while the Results column keeps counting them, so an old download shows fewer leads than Ads Manager (expired leads). Sync to a CRM from day one.
- Some questions are off limits. For housing, employment or financial products and services offers based in or aimed at the US or Canada, Meta bars collecting age, gender, relationship status and location details such as street address, city or postal code (same About lead ads article). More in Meta’s special ad categories.
- No landing page in the path. No Pixel, no fbclid, no first-party cookie: Meta counts the submission itself.
- Volume isn’t quality. The default form is built for more leads. Meta’s quality lever is conversion leads optimization, which learns from the CRM stages you send back.
Instant forms keep the lead inside Meta; a landing page sends it to your server, where you can measure it per creative. DropCPL logs each ad click on the landing page’s own domain and computes CPL for every creative × landing page combination from the leads that actually arrived. Start free →
Instant forms vs landing pages in your reports
Meta counts results “based on the objective and settings you selected”, with a default attribution setting of 7-day click, 1-day view and 1-day engagement, and models some results (Results). For an instant form, a result is a lead Meta received through its own form. For a landing page, it’s a Lead event your Pixel or Conversions API reported and Meta attributed to the ad. Put the two cost per result columns side by side and you’re comparing a count with an attribution.
So count both arms in the same CRM. The lead ads vs landing page guide walks through a fair test. DropCPL measures the landing page side of it: an instant form lead never loads a landing page, so there’s nothing for it to log.
