The real CPL is cost per lead computed from events you observed first-hand: a click logged on your own tracking domain, a form submission received by your server.
It is the same formula as CPL, with a stricter choice of inputs:
- Spend: from the ad platform, per
ad_id— it is the platform’s invoice. - Leads: from your own tracking, counted, not modelled.
Why it is called “real”
Because it is reproducible. Given the same clicks and the same form submissions, the number is the same. The platform’s number depends on an attribution model that changes: iOS adoption, view-through windows, modelled conversions.
The real CPL is not necessarily lower or higher — it is the one you can defend in a meeting, and the one that responds to a change you made.
What it excludes
- Conversions credited to a view with no click.
- Conversions the platform modelled for users it could not observe.
- Clicks that were never delivered to your page.
