Advantage+ audience is Meta’s audience setting in which its AI finds the audience for your ad set instead of you defining it, treating most of your targeting as suggestions (Meta Business Help Center). Ads Manager applies it automatically when it’s available and labels it Audience with Advantage+ on. In Sales, App promotion and Leads campaigns, the Audience section’s Advantage+ on label means exactly this (audience settings in Advantage+ campaigns).
How Advantage+ audience works
Meta’s AI draws on signals such as past conversions, Meta Pixel data and interactions with previous ads. What you enter splits into two kinds of input (controls and suggestions):
| Input | Type | What Meta does with it |
|---|---|---|
| Locations | control | stays inside them, unless you tick Reach more people likely to respond to your ads |
| Minimum age | control | never goes below it; you can’t set it under 18 (higher in some countries) |
| Custom audiences to exclude | control | always a control, even with Use as a suggestion checked |
| Languages | control | stays inside them |
| Age, gender | suggestion | starts there, may go beyond |
| Detailed targeting | suggestion | starts there, may go beyond |
| Custom and lookalike audiences to include | suggestion | starts there, may go beyond |
Meta’s own example: suggest women, and the ads can still reach men if its AI expects them to respond. Suggestions never break your controls. The minimum age rule comes from Meta’s Advantage+ audience setup guide, the exclusion rule from the audience settings article above. The setup guide adds one more: you can’t exclude lookalike audiences while Advantage+ audience is on.
Where you see it in Ads Manager
At ad set level, the Audience section has Controls (with Show more controls) and Suggest an audience, shown as Add suggestions in Sales, App promotion and Leads campaigns. To narrow it, choose Further limit the reach of your ads and uncheck Use as a suggestion: the section then reads Advantage+ off (what turns Advantage+ on and off). Raising the minimum age up to 25 or excluding a custom audience keeps it on.
Constraints that apply to the whole business belong in Advertising settings: allowed locations, a minimum age, brand-safety exclusions and your own employees. They apply to every campaign in the ad account and don’t change any campaign’s Advantage+ state (account controls).
Limits
- Retargeting. Meta says Advantage+ audience isn’t recommended for retargeting campaigns.
- Special ad categories. Meta’s controls article says campaigns under financial products and services, employment or housing, and ads about social issues, elections or politics, won’t have access to it. They get the restricted options described in Meta’s special ad categories.
- Meta’s numbers are Meta’s. The help article claims 9.7% lower cost per result with the Traffic, Engagement and Leads objectives, without naming the baseline. That’s a cost per result figure, not a cost per qualified lead.
When Meta picks the audience, the creative and the landing page are what’s left for you to test, and that’s the level DropCPL measures. It computes CPL per creative × landing page from first-party leads and spend synced per ad from the Meta Ads API. Start free →
Advantage+ audience in lead generation
With a leads goal, Meta looks for people likely to submit a form, and a broad audience finds plenty of them. Whether they buy is a separate question. Two levers stay in your hands. One is the signal: conversion leads optimization feeds Meta your CRM stages instead of raw submissions. The other is friction on the form or landing page: a qualifying question, or a Higher intent instant form.
My default: leave it on for prospecting, exclude a custom audience of the leads you already have, and turn it off for retargeting, as Meta itself advises. Then test it against your best manual ad set on the leads that reached your CRM. The Advantage+ leads campaigns guide covers that test.
